H1N1 Precautions Encouraged

Greetings to all in the name of Jesus Christ,

I am writing with regards to the spread of the Swine Flu.  While it has not been considered a pandemic by the authorities, we need to stay informed with updates concerning this disease.  Here is some practical advice:

1)  In all things be in prayer...pray that this disease will stop spreading, pray for those who are affected and the families of those who have lost loved ones. Pray for the many health professionals who are under a great deal of stress at this time as they treat those who are affected.  Pray for pig farmers who will lose much money due to this outbreak. Pray for the many who depend on tourism for their livelihood who now will not receive the income they expected because many people are canceling trips to Mexico and other countries.

2) If you feel you may have the flu see a doctor immediately and do not be around people.

3) Wash your hands regularly with hot water and soap.

4) Avoid contact with people who have the flu.

There have been no recommendations made to stop having public meetings or worship services, at this time, and so I would consider it safe to continue to have meetings and services.   The current health situation is and will continue to be closely monitored.

In all things, trust in the Lord.

In a statement released earlier today, Bishop Gregory V. Palmer, President of the Council of Bishops, noted that The United Methodist General Board of Discipleship has a resource for congregations on their Web site regarding Holy Communion and good hygiene to reduce the possibility of spreading illness. Most United Methodist churches will celebrate Holy Communion this weekend as the first Sunday of the month.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief also has on their Web site suggestions for preventing the spread of illness
